The afternoon of the show my husband and I drove from South Jersey to the Hamilton Train Station and hopped on a train to the city. We grabbed an Uber and headed to the upper East side. We were dropped off on a charming street across from Central Park.
Founded in 1901, The Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of illustration in the United States. Such history! Inside, we climbed the creaking steps and breathed in the air laced with a hint of linseed oil. I love old buildings.
The art! So many beautiful illustrations hanging on the walls. I immediately found the painting connected with our book and had my husband take a picture of me posing with it. This image happened to be one of my favorite images from the book! Even though it was not my artwork on display, it was the the artwork inspired by my words, which was thrilling.
As we walked around admiring the artwork, I noticed many of my writer and illustrator friends also had work in the show. I started taking pictures with their creations so that I could show them later. Some of my writer friends had no idea which image from their books had even been picked for the show.
Below are a couple of the photos. You can see I’m having fun.
Laurie Wallmark THE QUEEN OF CHESS, illustrator: Stevie Lewis
Leslie Kimmelman READY, SET, GO: The Amazing New York City Marathon, illustrator: Jessie Hartland
My husband and I spent some time talking with others admiring the artwork. It was nice to see to a few old acquaintances and chat over a glass of wine.
Then it was back to South Jersey with another exciting book experience tucked in my memory.
